Learning Dutch

Below are the most interesting resources I have personally used and have found most useful during my Dutch learning path

Free websites to practice/learn Dutch

Places on the web where you can find free courses and opportunities to practice the language

Duolingo

Great place to start practicing in all the main areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. A bit light in targeted theory but the notes (available on the website) that appear with the lessons help you to understand quite a few concepts and get you through. The gamification of the process might encourage you to practice on a daily or almost daily basis.

Duome

It provides a guidance of your studying habits. It also extracts the vocabulary from each lesson in Duolingo and that might help you when doing notes and some studying outside Duolingo in a more e traditional way. Just playing in Duolingo will not be enough and you will need to do the traditional studying: trying to understand the grammar, more specific studying of certain words and writing constructions, reviewing previous topics, etc.

Introduction to Dutch by the University of Groeningen in Future Learn.

The course lasts 3 weeks and in theory it should take you 3 hours daily but will only be the part dedicated to reading the notes from the course, watching the videos and listening to the audio lessons. You are, again, going to need some additional traditional study time, notes, etc.

The course also offers you the opportunity to join to a couple of sets in Quizlet designed to go along with the course above:

Websites to get free help with grammar issues

Dutch Learner's Grammar

By the University of Hull, University College London and University of Sheffield. Read more about the project and the people involved in Colofon.

De of Het? Welk Lidwoord

You will understand early on why you need to practice regularly in this website your knowledge of Het or De words. Subscribe to their newsletter and practice, practice, practice, there is no other way for this.

Dutch Online Grammar Course

Good to read different areas and get some grammar guidance.

Dutch Verb Conjugation

Eventually you are going to need some help with verbs and how to conjugate them. It is not as straight forward as it might be in English and then you have all the irregular verbs that you will need to just learn them by memorising as with other languages and English.

Paid services

Italki Dutch Tutors

The help in here is a paid service. You get to choose one of the many tutors advertising their services and you either practice your speaking and listening skills or get a more traditional lesson. It is going to depend of what you want to do and the tutor is offering with the advantage to do it in the convenience of your home

YouTube channels

Netflix

Dutch Films and TV

If there is something that it is going to help you a lot with your listening (and I am pretty sure your speaking and also reading/writing skills) is watching movies and TV series in Dutch. Use the subtitles always: if you are a beginner maybe watch the program once with English subtitles and a second time with Dutch ones or the other way around and try to pick up and understand as many words as you can.

My personal recommendation to start with is Toon. If you only pick up a few words here and there it will be enough as it is very funny and you will love it (you will not continue watching movies and tv series in Dutch if you are not liking them)
